This page is intended for judges, attorneys, probation officers, and court personnel evaluating our program as a sentencing option.
The Arkansas criminal justice system faces a well-documented revolving door problem. Nearly half of all released prisoners return within three years — not because people cannot change, but because short-term incarceration without long-term structure rarely produces lasting change.
A Prodigal's Path offers a different model. Rooted in the evidence-based Therapeutic Community approach, our program provides the time, structure, accountability, and community that makes genuine transformation possible.
"We are not a 30-day program. We are a life-change program. We accept that responsibility — and we take it seriously."
— Kevin Willis, Founder
The information below is intended to give the court a clear, honest picture of how our program operates, what we require of participants, and what the court can expect from us in return.
A Prodigal's Path is designed for adults who are genuinely motivated to change and whose primary drivers of criminal behavior are addiction, substance dependency, or the lifestyle patterns associated with long-term incarceration.
Who may not be appropriate:
We encourage referrals for borderline cases. We will conduct an individual assessment and communicate our determination to the referring court or attorney promptly.
A Prodigal's Path can serve as a court-ordered alternative to incarceration for qualifying individuals. Participation in our program can be structured as a condition of probation, a suspended sentence contingent on program completion, or as a diversion option at the court's discretion.
We welcome pre-sentencing conversations with judges and attorneys to determine whether a specific individual is a good candidate before a sentencing decision is made.
We understand that the court has a responsibility to monitor participants under its jurisdiction. We take that responsibility seriously and will provide consistent, honest reporting.
All reports are provided in writing and can be formatted to meet the specific requirements of the referring court or jurisdiction.
Progress reports are designed to give the court a clear, honest picture of how a participant is performing — not just whether they are present, but how they are engaging with the program.
Sobriety is a non-negotiable condition of participation in A Prodigal's Path. All residents are subject to random drug testing throughout their time in the program.
We do not hide or minimize substance violations. If a participant uses, the court will know. Our commitment to honesty with the court is absolute.
We recognize that building trust with the court takes time and consistent follow-through. We are committed to being a reliable, responsive, and transparent partner to every court that refers participants to us.

A Prodigal's Path is not a short-term program. The research on addiction and recidivism is clear: lasting change requires sustained engagement over time, not weeks or a few months.
Our program is organized into multiple phases, each with specific behavioral benchmarks and responsibilities. Progression through phases is based on demonstrated growth, not simply time served.
A Prodigal's Path is a two-year residential program. Courts ordering participation should plan for a full 24-month commitment. Advancement through phases is based on demonstrated growth and readiness, but the full two-year structure is a core part of what makes this program work.
The Therapeutic Community model is built on peer accountability — the idea that a community of people who have lived similar experiences is uniquely positioned to hold one another to a higher standard.
Participants quickly learn that the community sees everything. There is nowhere to hide from accountability — and most come to understand that this is what makes the program work.
The goal of A Prodigal's Path is not simply to keep someone out of prison — it is to produce men and women who are genuinely equipped to live differently. Graduates of our program are expected to leave with:
| Outcome Area | What We Work Toward |
|---|---|
| Sobriety | Sustained sobriety throughout the program, with the skills and community to maintain it after graduation |
| Employment Readiness | Vocational skills, work ethic, and employability developed through real work assignments during the program |
| Personal Responsibility | The ability to honestly assess their own behavior, make amends, and take ownership of their choices |
| Healthy Relationships | Restored or improved family relationships and the communication skills to sustain them |
| Community Contribution | Many graduates go on to mentor others in the program — becoming part of the solution rather than the problem |
| Reduced Recidivism | The Therapeutic Community model has demonstrated significantly lower recidivism rates compared to incarceration alone |
As A Prodigal's Path grows, we are committed to tracking and publishing our own outcome data for the court and the public.
